California Strawberries=Poison!!!???

Odds are most supermarket strawberries come from California - that's where 90 percent of the berries are produced. And if the strawberries are not organic, they were likely grown in fumigated soil, which is creating a stir between scientists and regulators in California.

The two groups recently faced off over the expected approval of a potentially dangerous pesticide. Currently, farmers use a fumigant called methyl bromide. But it is being phased out internationally because it damages the ozone layer. And the leading alternative "methyl iodide" has its own set of problems.
This is very likely 'because of its chemical structure' to be highly toxic, says John Froines, a chemist and professor of environmental health sciences at UCLA. "It is very worrisome, even frightening, to a chemist. And therefore it should be to the public as well." Frightening because animal studies show that methyl iodide is a carcinogen and a neurotoxin, and it can cause miscarriages.

Is anyone thinking of the 'law of unintended consequences?' In a bid to appease 'greenies' we're putting our children and ourselves on the sacrificial alter of big government.

California pesticide regulators plan to approve a new agricultural chemical called methyl iodide for the state's coastal strawberry fields, allowing levels of exposure that the state's own experts say will put farmworkers and bystanders at risk.

The Department of Pesticide Regulation has set acceptable exposure levels for methyl iodide that are 120 times higher than recommended by its own scientists and an eight-person panel the department commissioned to peer-review its work.

The decision to increase exposure levels has caused a rift within the DPR, a little-known but powerful agency that oversees a major segment of the state's multibillion-dollar farming industry. In interviews, all eight peer-review scientists said their warnings and scientific analysis of the health risks of methyl iodide appear to have been disregarded.

"I've never seen anything like this," said Ron Melnick, a panel member and scientist at the National Institutes of Health, who has participated in similar assessments in the past. "Why have someone review a document when you're just going to ignore it?"
Thousands of Californians live, work or play within a stone's throw of the state's strawberry fields. Thousands more do the hands-on field work that supplies supermarkets across the country, fueling a $2 billion industry.

Currently, most California strawberry growers rely on a fumigant called methyl bromide. But that chemical is being phased out under an international treaty because it damages the ozone layer.
Conventional strawberry growers have spent a decade looking for a viable alternative and have turned up only one: methyl iodide. Under the new regulation, farmers would use the chemical as a fumigant to sterilize the soil before the plants go in.

Lab tests involving rats and rabbits show methyl iodide can cause thyroid cancer and miscarriages. But scientists say methyl iodide is also a neurotoxin. Although this research is less well-developed, case studies of people who were accidentally exposed to methyl iodide show "chronic, irreversible brain damage," according to John Froines, a chemist at UCLA who chaired the independent review panel.
Amid this evidence, scientists at the DPR recommended a maximum exposure of .8 parts per billion for farmworkers. State regulators are proposing 96 parts per billion, over an eight-hour day.

Scientists on the review panel said methyl iodide hasn't been sufficiently studied to justify the larger amount. They're concerned about damage the fumigant could inflict on developing brains in infants and children, including subtle changes to IQ, or behavioral changes that might take years to detect.

Because of these concerns, the scientists added an extra "uncertainty factor" to their calculations, which lowered recommended exposure levels by a factor of ten.

The DPR's scientists say they were left guessing as to how their supervisors had made the jump to the larger amount, according to e-mails obtained by KQED'S "Quest." In the e-mails, staff scientists said the uncertainty factor appears to have been removed.
"We, as risk assessors, stand by our ... conclusions," one e-mail said. "We had to read between the lines to figure out how the target levels were calculated."

DPR spokeswoman Lea Brooks said in an e-mail that the scientists' assessment is one factor in the decision. She said that managers consider other factors as well, including tools such as respirators and buffer zones that farm workers can use to keep themselves safe. Brooks said risk managers didn't think an extra uncertainty factor was necessary and that scientists had overestimated the exposure workers would receive.

"The risk managers in this case," she wrote, "believe that the proposed restrictions will allow these products to be used safely."
Given the unknowns about neurotoxicity - and the proximity of California's strawberry fields to schools and residences - several scientists on the panel said they were surprised that the DPR would approve methyl iodide at all.

"We were actually - I don't want to use the word - horrified that there would even be a consideration of registration, without data about neurotoxicity," said Melnick.
In her e-mail, Brooks pointed to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, which approved methyl iodide in 2007, under the Bush administration, at levels well above what the DPR has set.
"No pesticide has been evaluated more than methyl iodide in the history of the Department of Pesticide Regulation," she wrote.

But the EPA appears to be having second thoughts about its own approval of methyl iodide. In September, the agency sent two representatives to California to take part in hearings held by the scientific review panel.

"Depending on the outcome of this external peer review and final risk assessment, EPA may choose to initiate a reevaluation of [methyl iodide fumigant]" said EPA pesticide scientist Jeff Dawson. "So we are very open to the results and conclusions of the panel. And this message comes from highest levels of the agency."

The public comment period on methyl iodide ends on June 29. California Sen. Dean Florez, D-Fresno, is sponsoring a state Senate hearing on the issue in Sacramento on June 17.

Put an End to U.S. Government Paid Murderers....BlackWater

It is time to say "NO" to Blackwater!

The U.S. State Department, led by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton,
just awarded Blackwater an 18-month, $120 million contract to
guard U.S. Consulates in Afghanistan.

Blackwater (U.S. paid mercenaries) were kicked out of Iraq by the
Iraqui government for purposely mascaraing 17 innocent civilians
in Baghdad's Al_Nissor Square.  This is just one example of the
many heinous & egregious crimes that Blackwater mercenaries feel free to perpetrate upon civilians of the Middle East.

When the murderous incident came to the attention of then Senator
Hillary (It Takes a Village) Clinton, she stated:
"These private security contractors have been reckless and
have compromised our 'mission' in Iraq....The time to show
these contractors the door is now long past due."

It is ridiculous and without conscience that Secretary of State
Hillary Clinton now supports the very same group of mercenaries
that she once so loudly denounced!

It is a crime against humanity that bullies & murderous groups such as Blackwater are allowed to exist...and it is further proof that the U.S. Government is out of control by sanctioning such a group and paying them with our tax dollars.

In any other situation the members of Blackwater would no doubt
be in prison for crimes committed upon innocent civilians....  Let's stop denying that Blackwater is a highly trained & organized band of U.S. Government paid TERRORISTS!

When will this stop?  If our Consulates are so in need of protection,
we have our very own group of government employees to do the
job.  It is commonly referred to as the U.S. Armed Forces Military Police. I suggest we employ our own "homegrown" military...it is after all why the young men & women enlisted in the first place: "To Protect & Defend".

Save Sea Turtles - Defenders of Wildlife
Take Action to Stop More Drilling Disasters
Oiled Pelican (Photo: Schyler / Defenders of Wildlife)
The Obama administration has proposed a 5-year plan for offshore oil and gas drilling that would open up huge swaths of our coasts to dangerous drilling – risking the lives of countless sea turtles, endangered whales, sea birds, polar bears and other wildlife.

Take action! Tell Interior Secretary Ken Salazar and the Obama administration that you oppose dangerous new offshore drilling off our coasts.

Dear Auntie- Nanuuq,

At a time when millions of gallons of oil are still spewing into the Gulf of Mexico, wreaking havoc on sea turtles, brown pelicans, sperm whales and irreplaceable coastal and marine ecosystems, it seems inconceivable that the Obama administration would consider more dirty, dangerous offshore drilling.

Yet, incredibly, that’s exactly what’s happening.

Take a stand for imperiled sea turtles and other marine wildlife. Urge the Obama administration to reject calls for offshore drilling off the coasts of Florida, Alaska, Virginia, North Carolina and other coastal states.

As of yesterday, more than 1,000 birds, 400 sea turtles and 40 marine mammals are already confirmed dead due to the Gulf oil disaster. Far more birds, sea turtles, whales, dolphins and other wildlife are likely dead or dying as a result of the ongoing oil leak in the Gulf.

The scale of this ecological catastrophe is massive. Yet drilling proponents persist in their calls to industrialize our coasts and sacrifice our marine wildlife at the altar of Big Oil’s profit margins.

The Obama administration had announced a six-month moratorium on new deepwater drilling, temporarily blocked planned drilling in the fragile Chukchi Sea and deployed thousands of federal workers to respond to the disaster in Gulf.

On Tuesday, however, a federal judge in Houston – with a history of significant financial investment in oil companies drilling the Gulf -- overturned the six-month ban on deepwater offshore drilling. The Obama administration plans to appeal the ruling and take administrative action to uphold the ban.

Ironically, the administration itself is also considering a 5-year leasing plan for offshore drilling that would approve new oil and gas drilling along the Mid-Atlantic and South-Atlantic coasts, on Florida’s Gulf Coast, and in the Arctic Ocean – risking the lives of countless sea turtles, endangered whales, sea birds, polar bears and other wildlife.

Speak out for our coastal wildlife and communities. Send your comments to the Obama Administration now.

In the face of the tragedy in the Gulf, we must make our voices heard. All comments are due by Wednesday (June 30th), so please take action now, forward this message and help us reach our 60,000-message goal.

Deepwater Horizon Fire (Photo: Coast Guard) This week, Defenders of Wildlife’s legal team moved to stop Big Oil’s attempt to block a temporary moratorium on deepwater offshore drilling, opposing the oil industry in federal court in Houston. Incredibly, a judge who has had significant financial ties to the oil industry ruled to lift the ban. However, the Obama administration plans to appeal the decision – a move supported by Defenders.
Loggerhead Sea Turtle (NOAA) So far, Defenders has mobilized more than 61,000 caring people like you in support of additional protections for loggerhead sea turtles. Loggerheads – already in trouble before the Gulf oil disaster – are particularly vulnerable to oil and can drown or be poisoned when they become oiled. Defenders has also mobilized to prevent threatened and endangered sea turtles from being burned to death as part of the controlled oil burns occurring in the desperate attempt to reduce oil from the ongoing Deepwater Horizon oil leak in the Gulf.
Polar Bears (copyright Norbert Rosing, NGS) Last week, more than 31,000 Defenders supporters urged Senate Democrats to pass comprehensive legislation to reduce America’s dependence on fossil fuels and address the impacts of climate change without opening additional coastal areas to offshore drilling.

Dear Auntie Nanuuq --

We have less than a week to go before California's primary election on Tuesday, June 8. Less than a week to stop the corporate takeover of California. Less than a week to win a progressive victory at the ballot box. And we need your help to win.
The five initiatives on the ballot -- especially PG&E's Prop 16 and Mercury Insurance's Prop 17 -- will determine if greedy corporations dominate California or if we can take back our democracy. California progressives need to vote YES on Prop 15 and NO on Props 16 and 17, or else we will lose every single battle.
Whether you're filling out your ballot at home, or planning to vote at the precinct on Tuesday, we're here to help you make progressive choices on the ballot initiatives.

Like we do every election, the Courage Campaign is providing a Progressive Voter Guide to our members for Tuesday's election. Produced in partnership with CREDO Action, this one-stop-shop voter guide also includes election recommendations from AFSCME, the California Democratic Party, California Federation of Teachers, California League of Conservation Voters, California Nurses Association, Calitics, and the League of Women Voters.

To find out more about the propositions on the June 8 ballot and to find your polling location, click here to download the Courage Campaign's two-page Progressive Voter Guide and share it with your friends ASAP:

To help you make your decisions in this election, our June 2010 Progressive Voter Guide includes:

The Newest Crime Against Women

During a routine visit, Jasmine's doctor persuaded her to get the Gardisil vaccine because it would help keep her safe from developing cervical cancer in the future.
Shortly after the vaccine she noticed dry skin and warts appearing on her hands. She complained that she thought she was losing more hair than usual and that her pimples were getting worse. Although, her symptoms continued to get worse the doctors gave Jasmine her second and third Gardisil shots. She died shortly there after.
We at Health Freedom Alliance have warned about the dangers of Gardisil shot before and now want to pass along a plea by Jasmine's mother and hope you will forward it to your friends and loved ones.

"It is too late for my daughter, but while they investigate her death why doesn't the government put a stop to this vaccine? Why won't they stop it and save a whole generation of young girls from potentially being maimed for life or possibly dying? Have they no regard for humanity? And how can pharmaceutical companies get away with murder by succeeding with a fast tracked poison to be administered into people knowing it could have a disastrous outcome? In the bible it stated that the love of money is the root of all evil. Isn't that the truth!"
Ms Renata, we feel your pain and are sickened by the systems and complicit media that propel the lies and disinformation regarding this useless vaccine. We pledge to spread your story far and wide in hopes to save lives. Thank you for speaking out!

During a routine visit, Jasmine's doctor persuaded her to get the Gardisil vaccine because it would help keep her safe from developing cervical cancer in the future. Jasmine received her first Gardisil vaccine in September 2008. Jasmine was always concerned about her appearance and she was quite distressed that shortly after the vaccine she noticed dry skin and warts appearing on her hands. She complained that she thought she was losing more hair than usual and that her pimples were getting worse. On the 20th of October Jasmine visited the doctor to treat her warts and dry skin. Jasmine had 4 or 5 warts frozen off. The doctor also said that her immunity was compromised so he prescribed a multivitamin as well as Locoid cream for the dry skin. The Locoid cream didn't help the dry skin.
Jasmine received her second Gardisil shot on November 18, 2008. After the shot the warts returned as well as the other symptoms Jasmine was experiencing. In addition, she now also felt pins and needles up and down her arms. Her whole arm became so weak she could hardly use it at work and started to knock things over and she would lose her grip at times. I would like to say at this point that the doctor should not have given her the second shot as her immunity was down and because of the warts that occurred after the first shot. In retrospect, a red light should have gone up and tests should have been done first to determine whether giving the second shot was wise."

Endangered Earth News: Major Win!

Major Victory -- Shell Oil's Arctic Drilling Stopped

In a huge victory for the Arctic's endangered species, today Interior Secretary Ken Salazar and President Barack Obama announced that Shell Oil company won't be allowed to drill for oil in Alaska's Beaufort and Chukchi seas this year. Shell was scheduled to begin drilling in just 34 days. The win comes in response to intense protests and court challenges by the Center for Biological Diversity and its allies, and the incredible outpouring of emails from our supporters to Obama calling to stop the drilling. Thank you for your unflagging commitment to protect the Arctic.

"We applaud the Secretary's decision and hope that he permanently ends all new offshore oil drilling in Alaska" said Kierán Suckling, executive director of the Center for Biological Diversity. "Drilling for oil in icy Arctic waters is like playing Russian roulette. There is no way to clean up a spill there, and endangered species such as polar bears, whales, walruses, and seals are already under too much stress."

Of note, on Tuesday, just days before this major announcement to stop Shell's drilling, Center staff and polar bear mascot Frostpaw greeted President Barack Obama on his visit to San Francisco with an urgent plea to heed the clear risks: Don't let Shell drill in the Arctic this summer. Apparently, the president listened.
Check out our statement on the suspension of Shell's drilling and our call for stronger regulatory measures, and read more about Obama's San Francisco visit in the San Francisco Chronicle.

Six-month "Pause"? Center Calls for Permanent Drilling Ban
This morning, President Obama also announced that he's instituting a six-month moratorium on deepwater drilling to review what happened with the BP explosion and spill, to ensure another disaster doesn't happen. It's an important first step, and we support the effort. But the President is allowing shallow-water drilling activities -- in less than 500 feet of water -- to continue. A spill in shallow water can be just as dangerous as deepwater drilling, and the Minerals Management Service's own data, collected over a 15-year period, demonstrates that "well control performance for deepwater drilling was significantly better than for shallow water operations." If the odds of a drilling spill happening at Deepwater Horizon are lower than for the drilling the President is still allowing, we have a lot more work to do.
Further, the president's announcement comes after a month of half-steps and broken promises by the Interior Department, which pledged a "moratorium" on oil drilling that turned out to be largely fictional as the administration continued to hand out environmental review-exempted drilling permits like those given to BP before the spill. As Center Senior Counsel Brendan Cummings said, "Interior Secretary Ken Salazar and the Obama administration should not pretend that a six-month review of drilling procedures will change anything. Expanding offshore drilling to all new areas needs to be permanently taken off the table."
We need to stop all new offshore oil drilling, not just delay it. Please take two minutes right now and call the White House to say that a six-month pause on offshore oil drilling isn't enough: We need to permanently ban new offshore drilling. Here's the number: 202-456-1111.

Lawsuit Challenges 49 Oil Projects in Gulf
Today the Center for Biological Diversity filed suit against Interior Secretary Ken Salazar and the Minerals Management Service to strike down the agency's exemption of 49 Gulf of Mexico offshore drilling projects from all environmental review. Just like BP's Deepwater Horizon drilling plan, all 49 plans in the suit state that no environmental review is necessary because there's essentially no chance of a large oil spill -- and if a spill were to occur, it would be quickly cleaned up with no lasting damage. The plans involve drilling off the coasts of Texas, Louisiana, and Mississippi, which provide habitat for many imperiled species, including Kemp's ridley and leatherback sea turtles, sperm whales, piping plovers, and bluefin tuna. And they're the very same areas now being devastated by the BP spill.
"Secretary Salazar continues to exercise extremely poor judgment in approving these plans without meaningful environmental review," said Miyoko Sakashita, oceans director at the Center. "He seems to have learned nothing from the oil pouring out into the Gulf of Mexico. Since Salazar is unwilling to shut down the use of environmental waivers that even the president has denounced, we are asking the courts to do so." The Center has also filed suit challenging the policy underlying the decisions to exempt Gulf drilling from environmental review, and we've started a legal action to require compliance with marine mammal and endangered species protection laws that have also been ignored in the Gulf.
Get more from the Associated Press and check out our Gulf Disaster Web site for the latest breaking news on what the Center's doing in the Gulf.

Protection Sought for Endangered Bluefin Tuna
With the Gulf spill spewing millions of gallons of oil into key habitat for the Atlantic bluefin tuna, it's more urgent than ever to protect the fish -- so this week, the Center for Biological Diversity filed a scientific petition to place it on the endangered species list. Overfishing has already erased more than 80 percent of the fish's North Atlantic population, and the Gulf disaster is threatening to devastate the western Atlantic population just as it swims to the spill area to spawn. The oil may coat eggs and larvae floating in the sheen, harm adult tuna that breathe oil into their gills, and move up the food chain from algae to tuna in the next few months. BP's heavy use of dispersants known to be deadly to fish only make the outlook worse for the bluefin -- one of the fastest, largest, and most majestic fish in the sea.
"Bluefin tuna encounter thousands of deadly hooks while migrating across the Atlantic, and now an oil spill will welcome home the survivors," said Catherine Kilduff, petition author and Center Oceans Program attorney. "Oil rigs are scattered throughout essential breeding habitat for bluefin tuna, and protections could force reforms of the Interior Department's lax environmental oversight of the oil industry by limiting drilling to avoid adverse effects on fish and their habitat."
Read more in the Guardian and learn about the bluefin on our brand-new Atlantic bluefin tuna Web page, and check out a map of its essential habitat and the Gulf oil spill.

Center Sues to Safeguard Whale Habitat
To save one of the most critically endangered marine mammals on the planet, this Tuesday the Center for Biological Diversity and allies filed suit to earn expanded habitat protections for the great North Atlantic right whale. In 2009, we petitioned to expand the whale's federally protected "critical habitat" to include areas key to the creature's survival -- calving grounds, critical feeding habitat, and the migratory route between calving and feeding grounds. But despite a legal requirement to take action on our petition within 90 days, the National Marine Fisheries Service hasn't responded to it at all. North Atlantic right whales, threatened by commercial fishing, ship strikes, habitat degradation, ocean noise, global warming, ocean acidification, and pollution, now number just 350 individuals.
"Critical habitat protections have a proven track record of helping endangered species to survive," said Andrea Treece, a senior attorney with the Center. "The North Atlantic right whale is on the edge of extinction, and further delay of habitat protection may seal the species' fate."
Check out our press release and learn more about the North Atlantic right whale.
