I Escaped From a Ford Escape

This is a 2011 Ford Escape, much like the three I went to check out two weeks ago.  I had read all the reviews, I checked the specs., the Car Fax.... I did my homework.  However what the reviews didn't tell me was how very FRAKIN' Uncomfortable the seats are, including the driver's seat.

After riding & driving both an XL and a XLS, after less than 15 minutes, I had the worst lower back ache imaginable.  Unlike my Ford Explorer, the Escape's seats are smaller: approximately 3 inches on each side and at least 3 inches more shallow, so the seat does not support your knees only the back of your thighs.  To make matters worse the seats are not contoured to support your body, they are flat and hard without lumbar support.

The XL has only 4 cylinders and it sure sounds like it, it was not a quiet ride by any means.

While the back passenger seats do fold down, they fold in such a way that you lose about 6-7 inches of cargo space.  The bottoms of the passenger seats have to be pulled upright into a vertical position before you can fold the back of the back seat down flat.  This is the same as the 1990 Ford Explorer Sport, so there is no camping in the back cargo area unless you are shorter than 5'3" and are willing to sleep on the diagonal.

Although Escape does have Flex Fuel (but in my area there are no flex fuel stations anywhere close).  In the end, I kept my 2000 Ford Explorer, the mpg difference is only 3 less 18 vs 21 and 21/22 vs 24/25.  There is just not enough difference to convince me to switch.

Maybe next year.....
