The Cost Of "Higher" Education

I believe that everyone who wants an education should have the right to have one and to be able to afford it.....

When in my last years/semester of SJSU/SLIS (San Jose State School of Library Information Science) we got a new dean....

He was not a Librarian and he didn't know much about the type of people that Librarians are....  He was a business major that liked & valued money more than he did students and education.

Up until the time he became dean SLIS only made a one penny profit on each class they gave.....  SLIS was not in "business" for pro fit, they were in the business of affordable education for those who wanted one in order to become a Librarian.

Classes were approximately $650 each..... However, when the new dean took over the price of one class went up to over $1000, thus making a HUGE Profit for the dean & SLIS.... Tuition went up over 75%, and the following semester saw another huge increase.

Thankfully he wasn't dean for much longer, but by the time he left the damage had been done.

That type of greed isn't of service; that type of greed isn't helping anyone; not students, not parents, not children and certainly not the communities that Librarians serve....  In my belief that man was only helping himself.

We need more college educated professionals in "service" for the people & the planet.  We need scientists, Librarians, teachers, lawyers, & doctors for people other than the filthy rich.

I am retired and I'm still paying off my student loan, but then I made the poor choice of "consolidating", which raised my interest rate almost double of what it originally was.  But still my rates are affordable in comparison to what they are today.

But imagine having to pay 75% or more of an increase in tuition in order to get an education.

That is so Fucking WRONG.....  By raising the cost of college and denying education to those who want it; we are wasting the lives of so many good people who would  otherwise be of service to communities that are truly in need of professional services.

Higher education was once a noble institution but now it is one of unmitigated greed & bias.....  I call BULLSHIT!
